By encouraging children to grow their own vegetables, we can give them a healthy nudge towards their five-a-day.Of course, it all starts with the seeds, so our idea was to give out free packets of carrot seeds.
To make things more entertaining, we devised a ‘feed the rabbit’ game, which meant children were rewarded with a packet of seeds if they managed to throw a number of felt carrots into our rabbit’s mouth; a game with a very high success rate, given our tolerance for cheating in younger players.
Carrot seeds are ideal, as they can be grown in a window box or bucket.
Carrots are packed full of nutrients and are a very good source of Vitamin A, which helps eyesight, skin and growth, and also helps the body fight infection. Plus they are highly versatile, taste delicious raw and cooked, and can be used in a wide variety of dishes – including Pam’s Mum’s carrot cake and Alan’s coleslaw.
